![]() ![]() The narrative implication then is that you never directly control Zero when fighting instead, you’re simply planning out what he will do, and all of your failed attempts are contextualized as Zero looking into the future and realizing that various plans of attack will result in his death. Chronos allows Zero to see what will happen if he undertakes specific actions, and how enemies will react. ![]() Zero takes this drug partially to survive, but also because it makes him an almost unstoppable assassin by giving him the ability to peer a short way into the future. ![]() The aforementioned Chronos that Zero takes is not just a story element it’s the framing device by which the entire gameplay operates off of. But Katana Zero goes the extra step to connect this to its overarching narrative with how it contextualizes its slow motion, failure, and even its entire core gameplay loop. Playing through a room is satisfying in its own right, but then getting to watch yourself tear through a room, deflecting bullets and slicing guards to pieces effortlessly without displaying the slow motion crutch you used, goes the extra mile to emphasize just how powerful Zero appears to everyone around him.īy itself, this might simply be an interesting gameplay touch that adds a degree of satisfaction for players who wish to bask in their power. It’s a very simple touch, but it goes a long way towards showing how strong Zero is, rather than simply telling us. After every cleared room, the game shows the player a replay of their actions, except in full speed without any of the slow down that the player used. What starts to make Katana Zero stand out as a unique title is the framing of its slow motion mechanics. It encourages the player to make good use of a limited resource.īut bullet time is by no means a mechanic exclusive to Katana Zero. Your time slowing abilities are finite and have to recharge over time, however, and given that each room has a time limit of its own you often can’t simply just wait for it to recharge. The protagonist, Zero, can slow down time at any point to better react to enemies, and make it easier to parry incoming gunfire or time a precise roll. Perhaps the most immediate distinction between the two games is the inclusion of a bullet time mechanic in Katana Zero. Get past these surface level similarities, however, and you’ll find a notably different experience, one with several extremely unique elements that make it worth examining in its own right. Both games even play with the concept of drug usage by the main character, although Katana Zero’s narcotic of choice, Chronos, has a much more stated and significant role. Levels consist of moving between a series of rooms and picking off enemies quickly and carefully, with some slower, story focused segments in between to provide more context to the world. If you stopped at that initial look, you could easily be forgiven for believing that Devolver Digital just transposed Hotline Miami into a sidescrolling format, added some more katanas and called it a day. However, if you’re willing to look past its over the top presentation, you’ll find a fascinating blend of story and gameplay that blurs the line between the two and provides a spectacular example for how to harmonize these concepts.Īt a glance, Katana Zero invites numerous comparisons to Hotline Miami, with its color scheme, pixel art aesthetic, soundtrack, and everything-dies-in-one-hit gameplay loop. A relatively low budget, pixel art platformer/slasher from Devolver Digital probably isn’t going to garner mainstream appeal, and it most certainly isn’t where one would expect to find a title with one of the most unique and interesting methods of narrative telling in recent memory. In a year full of great titles, 2019's Katana Zero perhaps understandably flew under most people’s radars. First up, last year's cult hit, Katana Zero. I'll be trying to elaborate on what sets a specific design choice apart, why it does or doesn't work, and what the industry can learn from it. Welcome to the first part of a monthly series taking a look at unique or interesting game design. By Paul Broussard, posted on 09 July 2020 / 4,393 Views ![]()

The best privacy fence will depend on each homeowner’s goals for the fence and their yard. If you opt for a natural privacy hedge, these can be much taller and often go up to 12 feet. If you do need extra height, he suggests adding 12 to 18 inches of lattice on the top of a fence, which will add privacy while minimizing the visual impact of a taller fence. ![]() “I’d advise not going any taller than you have to, both to save on expenses and to limit the shrinking, enclosing effect fences can have on a space,” Lenhart says. How tall can I make my privacy fence?įences that are six feet tall should block most views from the ground level. For larger yards, he suggests making use of natural greenery, like trees, to keep unwanted eyes from infiltrating your space. In general, he says privacy fences make the most sense on small properties, like town house gardens. “As a rule of thumb, fences should be at least two inches off the ground to let critters the freedom to move between properties,” Fargion explains. Privacy fences cut the land into lots, which can be problematic for the bugs, insects, and other wildlife that live there. This doesn’t mean privacy fences are necessarily a bad idea, just that there are a few considerations to take into account before getting started. “From an ecological and natural point of view, privacy fences are the least desirable element in the landscape,” says Jonathan Fargion, a landscape designer based in New York City. Here, a guide to building backyard landscaping and a privacy fence-whether you use a pergola or a trellis-to keep onlookers out and a peace of mind in. “A privacy fence does all the work of a typical fence-indicating boundaries and keeping people and animals in or out-while also blocking views into the yard,” says Kevin Lenhart, a landscape designer and design director at Yardzen, one of the nation’s largest online landscape platforms. Luckily, clever retaining wall ideas and privacy fence ideas (some are even DIY landscaping designs) can ensure your backyard is the secluded oasis you want it to be. Hidden areas, made with privacy screening, create a sense of mystery, as you do not see all of the garden at once. “A garden should, at its best, connect us to nature, and this is simpler to do when you can relax in a peaceful setting. “Privacy fencing, either along a property line or around a specific area in your garden, creates a sense of sanctuary, seclusion, and peacefulness,” says Janice Parker, a landscape architect based in Greenwich, Connecticut. Your home should be the place where you feel the most relaxed, but without some privacy fence ideas it’s hard to truly unwind if you feel like you’ve got unwanted eyes peeking over your shoulder. ![]() ![]() There's nothing strange about that oil that should inhibit emulsification. The majority of Columbia 's recovered remains are stored at the Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building, though some pieces are on public display at the nearby Visitor Complex. Numerous memorials and dedications were made to honor the crew following the disaster the Columbia Memorial Space Center was opened as a national memorial for the accident, and the Columbia Hills in Mars' Gusev crater, which the Spirit rover explored, were named after the crew. The loss of Columbia and its crew led to a refocusing of NASA's human exploration programs and led to the establishment of the Constellation program in 2005 and the eventual retirement of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. The Columbia Accident Investigation Board convened shortly afterwards concluded that damage sustained to the orbiter's left wing during the launch of STS-107 fatally compromised the vehicle's thermal protection system. Columbia was also used to retrieve the Long Duration Exposure Facility and deploy the Chandra observatory, and also carried into space the first female commander of an American spaceflight mission, the first ESA astronaut, the first female astronaut of Indian origin, and the first Israeli astronaut.Īt the end of its final flight in February 2003, Columbia disintegrated upon reentry, killing the seven-member crew of STS-107 and destroying most of the scientific payloads aboard. The Extended Duration Orbiter pallet was used by the orbiter in thirteen of the pallet's fourteen flights, which aided lengthy stays in orbit for scientific and technological research missions. Columbia was used for eleven of the fifteen flights of Spacelab laboratories, all four United States Microgravity Payload missions, and the only flight of Spacehab's Research Double Module. While it was seldom used after completing its objective of testing the Space Shuttle system, and its heavier mass and internal airlock made it less than ideal for planned Shuttle-Centaur launches and dockings with space stations, it nonetheless proved useful as a workhorse for scientific research in orbit following the loss of Challenger in 1986. In addition to a heavier fuselage and the retention of an internal airlock throughout its lifetime, these made Columbia the heaviest of the five spacefaring orbiters around 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) heavier than Challenger and 3,600 kilograms (7,900 pounds) heavier than Endeavour. ![]() As only the second full-scale orbiter to be manufactured after the Approach and Landing Test vehicle Enterprise, Columbia retained unique features indicative of its experimental design compared to later orbiters, such as test instrumentation and distinctive black chines. ![]() Named after the first American ship to circumnavigate the upper North American Pacific coast and the female personification of the United States, Columbia was the first of five Space Shuttle orbiters to fly in space, debuting the Space Shuttle launch vehicle on its maiden flight in April 1981.
